The Many Voices of The Universe
Magic is everywhere, but we’ve become so used to it that it’s become ordinary. When we’re children, we see everything as magical and wonderful. We lose that somewhere along the way. After a certain point, logic and pragmatism seem to be valued or encouraged more and we lose our sacred connection to our emotions and intuition. I don’t believe one is better than the other; they are both equally important halves of the same whole. Without both, there is imbalance. But logic tends to dismiss the magical and I think that’s a great misfortune. Magic is the fun and colour and life and wonder that exists in everything.
I remember losing that magic, and I remember gaining it back. It reminds me of this quote by Albert Einstein: "There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” It was like a great veil was dissolving before my very eyes, and I could see the glimmer in everything again. I could see the life in everything, in each tree and bird and song and person. I could see the magic of everything having a soul and a purpose. The magic of realizing everything is connected and One, that you are not separate from the flowers or the rain or your neighbour. When you sit there and think about the whole history of the world, back, back, back, to the creation of the earth itself and back even further to the creation of the Universe itself, it’s impossible not to see everything as a miracle. To be alive at the same time as the people you love— what is more miraculous than that?
Once I saw the Oneness in everything, I could begin to hear it all speak to me. How often we pray for help or a sign or a blessing but fail to see all the communication that comes our way. Maybe it’s the logic in us that takes over and says no help or sign or blessing is coming, or it expects it in an obvious way. But the Universe is quite subtle to those who aren’t paying attention, though it’s quite loud to those who are tuned in. The Universe speaks in the language of the heart. It speaks in dreams and symbols. It speaks through song lyrics and book quotes, through other people who unknowingly say exactly what you’re looking for. It’s thinking of a passed loved one and seeing a feather floating or daydreaming about pursuing your passions and seeing 11:11 on the clock. It’s contemplating something about your life and seeing a hawk flying into view or seeing a butterfly every time you think about the same thing. It’s thinking about someone you love and then they call you. Once you start to see it, you see it everywhere. And as you connect the dots and begin to understand the way the Universe speaks, you realize you’re in constant communication. It hears you and responds, and you know it’s meant for you because it gives you this undeniable electricity and a comfort of knowing.
The trick is to be here. To be fully present in your body, in the moment that is now. It is the only way to hear the whispers of your heart. It demands your full attention. You’ll miss it if you’re stuck in your head or on your phone. But just because you don’t always see it happening doesn’t mean it isn’t happening anyway. The show goes on whether you participate or not. Connect back to yourself, to the land, to the ancient part of yourself that never forgot the language of the Universe, of the stars, of the plants and animals. There is so much wisdom and magic around you if you’re open to seeing it. Be open to the messages coming from anywhere because the Universe will try to communicate with you through many ways until you notice it. And when you notice it, you’ll realize you’ve never been alone.
